Back in the summer of 2019, Purina announced that they had identified a way to actively reduce the primary allergen that affects people with allergies to cats, and now they are unveiling their new line of foods using this innovation: Purina Pro Plan Live Clear!
It’s estimated that 1 in 5 people experience allergic reactions to cats, with the primary source of allergies being the protein Fel d1. Unfortunately these allergies can result in cats being rehomed, isolated from the house, or abandoned. This new food hopes to help make it easier for people with allergies to be around cats, when used in conjunction to other allergy treatment protocols.
The key to this breakthrough is the discovery of anti-Fel d1 antibodies in eggs laid by hens raised with cats. Adding the antibodies to kibble neutralizes the allergens in the cat’s saliva while not affecting the cat’s digestion of the protein itself.
Fun Fact: They don’t know why cats need Fel d1, but all cats produce it in their salivary glands, where it is then dispersed to their hair and skin when they groom themselves.
Purina will be launching the Live Clear line of food in the US later this spring, and in Canada towards the end of 2020. Varieties available will be: Adult Chicken & Rice, Adult Salmon & Rice, and Adult Sensitive Skin & Stomach Turkey & Oat Meal. It is not a prescription food, and will be available at pet food retailers and on-line: I will add links when it is available for purchase!
This is a pretty exciting innovation from Purina that will hopefully help keep cats with their owners, and give owner’s with allergies some hope and relief.
